MP Dr. Helen Haines learns about co-operative housing

Co-op housing can be a key part of the solution to the regional housing crisis. Last week, we had the opportunity to meet with Dr Helen Haines, independent Federal member for the seat of Indi, and the members of Glenworth co-operative to learn about co-operative housing.

After hearing about the recent research by Western Sydney University, The Social Value of Housing Cooperatives in Australia, Dr Haines contacted CEHL to meet with co-op members and gain a better understanding of co-op living.

The Glenworth Housing Co-operative was established in 1995, with homes located in Rutherglen, Wahgunyah, and Beechworth, Victoria, and their members shared their experience and ideas. Dr Haines is committed to solving the regional housing crisis, ‘making sure that everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home’. We look forward to continuing our work at the federal level to advocate for an expanded and diverse housing co-op sector in Australia, to deliver housing stability and dignity to more Australians.
