Grattan Institute Report Highlights the Growing Housing Crisis for Older Renters

A new Grattan Institute report reveals the harsh reality faced by older Australians in the private rental market.

A new Grattan Institute report shines a much-needed light on the impact private rental is having on the quality of life of our community elders.

Two in three retirees who rent in the private market live in poverty, and the issue is expected to worsen.

An earlier Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) report shows that shared equity homeownership and co-operative housing are the top two preferred options for low-income older Australians.

While all retirees understandably would prefer to own their own home, co-operative housing should be considered for the thousands of people around Australia who are no longer working and not financially secure.

The report adds to the affordable housing debate, which will be a key theme in the upcoming federal election.
