From Homelessness to Home: How Co-op Housing Transformed Sharon’s Life

Liz Thomas and Sharon, Maintenance Director spoke to WIN News for this special report.

“When I got the phone call to access my property, it saved me.”

Sharon was living in a tent at the Bendigo Showgrounds when an opening came up at one of our co-operatives—a phone call she says saved her.

Now in permanent and affordable housing, Sharon has become a vital part of her co-op community as maintenance director. Bendigo is one of our thriving co-op housing regions, with eight co-ops collectively managing almost 150 homes.

As part of the Australian Co-operative Housing Alliance (ACHA), we want to see co-op housing grow to 10% of the community housing stock in the next decade, so that more people like Sharon can rent like they own.

Liz Thomas and Sharon spoke to WIN News yesterday for this special report.
