CEHL is proud to welcome Mosaic, the 86th co-op in our program and the first newly formed housing co-operative in over 14 years.
Mosaic takes its name from the many individual pieces that come together to form something new. Like all our co-ops, Mosaic is founded on the principles of inclusivity, co-operation, and community.
Nestled in a pocket of Brunswick that’s rapidly transforming — from underused industrial land to mid-rise, community-focused housing — Mosaic is part of a bold shift toward urban density with purpose.
With Sydney Road a stone’s throw away and Jewel Railway Station in the other direction, Mosaic members have the best of inner-city living at their doorstep.
Back in 2018, the Victorian Property Fund opened rounds for projects aimed at increasing the supply of affordable and environmentally sustainable community housing for low income and disadvantaged Victorians.
That brief aligned perfectly with CEHL’s mission. With an Ecologically Sustainable Development grade of excellence, a Built Environment Sustainability Scorecard of 74%, and a walkability score of 98/100, Mosaic is a powerful example of sustainable, inner-city living.
For new co-op member, Anna, moving into Mosaic has been an empowering and motivating experience.
“With my experience in public housing; you have to convince them why not having housing is detrimental to your wellbeing – because there are such long wait lists,” she says,
“Whereas in the co-op, it’s about putting forward your best self. What can I contribute? What can I bring? When I applied for Wilson Ave, I felt like I was proving what I’m capable of… whereas previously with public housing I felt I had to prove what a wreck I was.”
This development adds to Melbourne’s much-needed social housing stock, delivered through CEHL’s unique co-op model. It means more people have access to secure and affordable homes and are part of a connected community built for the long term.
Mosaic is showing us what the future of co-op housing can look like – building a strong community that puts people, planet, and purpose before profit.
Together, we are building something unique, and part of a movement that prioritises people over profit, community over individual gain, and long-term outcomes over short-term fixes.
